The USAID’s Mission Director in Egypt Sean Jones announced Sunday that millions of US dollars have been pumped into the cultural tourism sector in Egypt, alongside the restoration and development of many archaeological sites in Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and more across the country.
This came during the opening ceremony of the Bimaristan Hospital al-Muayyad Sheikh in Souq al-Silah area in Cairo, which is currently being developed within the Integrated Management of Cultural Tourism (IMCT) project in cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the USAID.
Jones stressed the ongoing efforts through the IMCT project to develop archaeological sites, and thanked the attendees for their keenness to participate in this celebration.
The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mohamed Ismail Khaled, said that the IMCT project is funded by USAID under an agreement between the governments of Egypt and the US regarding Sustainable Investment in Tourism in Egypt, implemented by the FHI 360 foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities represented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
He added that the project aims to keep pace with current global trends towards providing an authentic tourism experience for visitors, with a focus on historic Cairo and Luxor.
It also establishes a sustainable approach to cultural tourism management and places Egypt in a strategic position for years to come.
