Angry residents of the village of Beni Helal in Sohag blocked the Cairo-Aswan agricultural road on Sunday night after four villagers–including a woman and her young child–were injured in a collision between a taxi and an unlicensed motorcycle.
Protesters demanded that a speed bump be placed in the area to prevent future accidents.
Some 700 residents gathered to block the road, setting fire to tires and reeds placed on the highway. Some hurled stones at security personnel, who responded by firing tear gas into the crowd and arresting eight protestors.
Road traffic resumed after about two hours.
