The United States did not respond to requests from the Egyptian government to freeze the bank accounts of members of the Mubarak regime, said Assistant Foreign Minister al-Husseiny Abdel Wahab.
He also said the Foreign Ministry is keen on chasing money siphoned out of the country.
Speaking at a forum in Washington, Abdel Wahab said the ministry does not know if the US administration is in contact with Islamist groups in Egypt, or if it is worried about the Muslim Brotherhood rising to power.
“But the US is interested in Egypt, as it is the key to the Middle East region,” he said, adding that a high US official responsible for religious freedom would visit Egypt soon.
