Western Desert terrorist cell eradicated: armed forces

A joint operation by army and police forces in the Bahariya Oasis managed to eradicate a terrorist cell on Monday, said the Armed Forces in a statement.

The raid killed ten alleged miligints, while one suspect was arrested and three pickup trucks used by the militants were destroyed, according to the statement. The statement added that two barrels of highly explosive substances were seized.

The army and police forces have increased raids against presumed terrorist havens in the Sinai Peninsula, and the country has also turned its eyes to the Western Desert, fearing an influx of militants from Libya.

The Bahariya Oasis raid comes a week after the army mistakenly killed 12 Mexican tourists whom they believed were a terrorist group.

An Islamic State affiliate claimed they had beheaded a Croatian hostage, who worked for a French geological excavations company, in August.
