Fourteen people are now dead and another eight injured after a truck collided with a microbus on the Cairo-Assiut agricultural road.
Those injured were rushed to the Assiut University Hospital, while the dead bodies were transported to three hospitals in Assiut.
The crash occurred when a truck driver, driving at high speed while carrying 15 tons of wheat, crashed into a microbus bound for Assiut.
The 22-year-old microbus driver died in the crash.
The ages of the deceased ranged between ten and 62, with the youngest victim an unidentified girl. The identities of another four victims remain undetermined.
The driver of the truck, who is in his fifties, is among the injured.
The vehicle wreckage was removed from the road and an accident report filed.
Assiut Governor Nabeel al-Ezabi will pay LE5000 in immediate compensation to the families of the deceased and LE2000 to the injured passengers.
Road accidents represent the second most common cause of death in Egypt. A government report revealed that an average of 18 Egyptians were killed in road accidents every day last year.
The high incidence rate of road accidents in Egypt is generally attributed to poor roads, failure to follow traffic rules, and drug abuse among truck and bus drivers.
