Thai embassy staffer assaults Egyptian woman

A staffer at Egypt's Thai embassy launched a shocking physical assault on an Egyptian lawyer during a night out at one of Egypt's exclusive five-star hotels, Egypt Independent has heard.

First Secretary of the Thai Embassy in Egypt, Kakanang Amaranand, verbally and physically assaulted lawyer Rana Ashraf on Thursday evening, leaving her with a black eye, open wound in her head, scratches all over her body and 4 deep bite marks on her arm.

Ashraf was also described as emotionally distressed after the incident.

Ashraf and her husband Mohaemed Sameh told Egypt Independent on Sunday that the incident took place just after they asked Amaranand her name.

The embassy secretary responded by insulting and kicking Ashraf.

“When I tried to put a stop to her violence, she tried to hit me,” said Sameh.

“My wife then got up to stand between us so she could stop her, and this is when the brutal attack started,” he claimed. “She pushed her on the couch, kicked her in the face and head at least 5 times with her heels, pulled her hair out [and] bit her till she bled."

“It was a completely one-sided fight,” he maintained.

Before the fight, Amaranand was said to be drinking heavily, bragging about her diplomatic immunity and lambasting Egypt.

“Egypt is the worst country I have ever been to after Lebanon," she was quoted as saying.

The couple filed a complaint at Qasr El Nil police station and are waiting to hear the prosecution’s decision.

Colleagues of Amaranand said the embassy secretary believes her diplomatic immunity will protect her from any prosecution regardless of any action taken by the couple.

Ashraf is demanding that the secretary be subjected to a drug test as well as a psychological evaluation. Her actions on Thursday were “insane and unbelievable,” Ashraf said.

The Thai embassy in Cairo told Egypt Independent on Sunday they had not received an official complaint from the victim.
