Arab League officials approve granting the US more time to revive derelict Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, a league source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The statement follows a visit to Washington by chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. The previous month-long grace period—brokered on 9 October in Sirte, Libya—will end Monday.
“If the Palestinian Authority (PA) does not see an urgent need for another grace period, we won’t mind,” said the Arab League source.
The source said Arab League officials are actively involved in negotiations and hold sway in Palestinian Authority decision-making.
“There’s an ongoing communication between Palestinian officials, including President Mahmoud Abbas, and the Arab League,” the source said. “Erekat always communicates with Amr Moussa, Arab League Secretary-General, to update him with developments.”
Regarding the next meeting of the Follow-Up Committee, a group designated to analyze peace negotiations strategy, the source said, “The committee is held by a Palestinian request. If there’s a need to postpone it, no disagreements will occur.”
