General Authority For Supply Commodities (GASC) Vice-Chief Mamdouh Abdel Fattah said Egypt’s wheat imports will not be affected by political incidents in Ukraine.
The GASC depends on imported wheat from different exporters like Ukraine, Romania, France, the US and Russia at the lowest price and high quality, Abdel Fattah added. Out of a total of 4.5 million tons of imported wheat, Egypt has imported close to 880,000 tons of wheat from Ukraine since 20 July, 2013.
Egypt is the biggest wheat-importing country in the world, while Russia is the largest producer of wheat.
Anti-Russia protests in Ukraine that have been ongoing since the end of 2013 led to the ouster of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February. The protests were staged after Yanukovych stepped back from signing a commercial cooperation agreement with the European Union.
