Mexican Senate calls for Egypt travel warning following attack

The Mexican Senate called on the Foreign Ministry to raise the level of the travel warning for Egypt following the killing of eight Mexican tourists and the injury of six others in an attack during a Western Desert Safari trip on Sunday.

The demand was unanimously agreed on by the Mexican Senate, which strongly condemned the incident. The senators also agreed to give instructions to the Mexican Consulate in Egypt to take precautionary measures to protect its nationals.

The senate has instructed the Mexican government to follow up on the results of investigations into the incident in cooperation with the Egyptian government.

National Action Party MP and Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Gabriela Cuevas criticized the Mexican Foreign Ministry for not issuing a travel warning for Egypt.

Mexico's government demanded that Egypt compensate tourists mistakenly attacked by Egyptian security forces.

The demand was made in a diplomatic note delivered by Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos de Icaza to Egypt's ambassador to Mexico as survivors and families of victims were flying home with Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu.
