Winter begins on Tuesday: astronomy institute

The winter season starts Tuesday at 6:49 a.m., according to astronomical calculations made by scientists at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics.

The start of winter was preceded by two weeks of cold weather which indicated that winter this year may be very cold.

Head of the institute, Aboul Ella Amin, said the winter season should last for 88 days, 23 hours and 42 minutes, recording as the shortest season of the year.

The winter solstice occurs Tuesday, when the sun's rays fall perpendicular on the Tropic of Capricorn, according to Amin.

Winter is characterized by short daylight hours, low temperatures and the continuation of the night above the northern Arctic Circle for 24 hours daily for a period of 6 months.
