Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been transferred to the intensive care unit since a month ago following a bout of fatigue, Mubarak’s lawyer Farid al-Deeb said on Sunday.
Deeb stated that Mubarak was prepped to undergo an intestine surgery at a military hospital, and suffered health complications following the operation. While Mubarak’s condition has slightly improved, he is not yet in a fully stable condition.
Family members are the only ones allowed visitation, he added.
Mubarak’s son Alaa tweeted in January that his father underwent surgery and his condition was “stable”, without providing further details.
Mubarak was ousted in the 2011 uprising that swept Egypt as part of the Arab Spring movement that gripped the region. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for involvement in the killing of anti-government protesters but later retried and subsequently acquitted and released in 2017.
Mubarak’s two sons, Alaa and Gamal, were both convicted and served prison terms for corruption.
Since their release, Mubarak’s family has remained in Egypt, where they have kept a low profile but still enjoy special treatment under current president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Sisi led the overthrow of elected but divisive Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, Mubarak’s immediate successor.
