Ruben Benjamin, representative of the southern Sudan government in Cairo, on Sunday said the people of southern Sudan will definitely vote for separation in the January referendum.
Speaking at a conference on Egyptian-Sudanese relations, Benjamin added that the separation would not affect Egypt’s quota of Nile water. “We are fully aware of Egypt’s water needs,” he said.
For his part, Samir Hosni, head of the Arab League’s Arab-African cooperation department, criticized the Arab states for failing to preserve the unity of Sudan. “We shall soon cry over spilled milk,” he said.
Al-Tayeb Abul Kassem, acting Sudanese ambassador to Cairo, said his government will continue to work on maintaining the unity of Sudan “until the last second before the referendum.”
