FM affirms Egypt’s support for efforts to restore peace in Mali

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has affirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for all efforts meant to settle disputes through peaceful means in order to protect the sovereignty of Mali and its territorial integrity.

Shoukry’s remarks came during his meeting Wednesday with his Malian counterpart Abdoulaye Diop at the headquarters of Egypt’s permanent mission to the UN in New York on the fringe of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77).

During the meeting, Shoukry voiced Egypt’s keenness on promoting bilateral ties with Mali, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

A comprehensive approach is needed to handle the crises in Mali, the spokesman quoted Shoukry as saying during the meeting.

Shoukry also said that Egypt stands fully ready to contribute to the reconstruction and development efforts in the Sahel region, added the spokesman.

The top diplomat reviewed Egypt’s pioneering role in combating terrorism and extremist ideologies, said the spokesman.

The minister further said that Al Azhar can contribute to spreading the teachings of moderate Islam in Mali, according to the spokesman.

He also said that Mali could very well benefit from the role of the Sahel and Sahara Counter-terrorism Center, which was recently inaugurated in Cairo.

Egypt is keen on providing support for Mali in the various spheres, especially in the health sphere, and providing the necessary medical equipment, Shoukry affirmed during the meeting.
