Egypt’s Aya Shahata advances to Taekwondo quarterfinals at Paris Olympics

Egyptian taekwondo athlete Aya Shahata has secured her spot in the quarterfinals of the Paris 2024 Olympics after defeating Spain’s Cecilia Castro in the round of 16 of the 67 kg category.

Shahata lost the first round but managed to score two points in the second, giving her a lead. She then extended her advantage with two more points in the third round, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory over the world number eight.

With this win, Shahata has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics.

The Egyptian delegation continues its participation in the Olympic Games on Friday, with competitions in weightlifting, taekwondo, wrestling, diving, synchronized swimming, and gymnastics.

The duo of Hana Hekal and Malak Toson will compete in the synchronized technical routine at 8:30 pm.

Weightlifters Karim Kahla and Nemaa Saeed will compete in the 89 kg and 71 kg categories, respectively, at 4:00 pm and 8:30 pm.
