Rebel forces have brought an end to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year regime in the Levant, forcing him to flee and take refuge in Russia.
The Syrian rebel forces broadcast their first statement to the Syrian people on state television, while the deposed Syrian President left Damascus once opposition forces entered the capital.
The opposition announced that they had “liberated” Damascus and overthrown Assad’s rule, adding that all detainees have been released.
Syrian state television broadcast an image captioned “the victory of the great Syrian revolution and the overthrow of the criminal Assad regime.”
At the same time, the Syrian Prime Minister, Muhammad Ghazi al-Jalali, said in a recorded message on Sunday, that his government is ready “to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the people.”
Further clashes
The former director of the Military Studies Center, Alaa Ezz al-Din, expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Syria.
He noted that these armed opposition factions are not in harmony with each other, and that each militia or armed group will control a certain area, leading to further clashes due to ideological and doctrinal differences.
Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, he explained that the US and Israel are monitoring the situation without direct intervention, allowing warring factions to weaken each other.
He anticipates that Israel will exploit this chaos to strengthen its control over the Golan Heights, and perhaps establish a buffer zone in the eastern Golan to secure it, with the possibility of annexing this area in the future, to achieve its ambitions of Israeli expansionism.
He added that dividing Syria into smaller states, potentially up to three, may be a possible result of the ongoing conflicts, leading to further weakness and disintegration, which serves the interests of the US and Israel in the region.
A dark future
“The Arab future is dark, as Iraq, Syria, and the Palestinian resistance have been destroyed,” he said, pointing out the difficulty of this period, which requires solidarity from everyone inside Egypt.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left his post and has given instructions for a peaceful transfer of power, after negotiations with parties to the Syrian conflict.
It said in a statement that it is in contact with all Syrian opposition factions.
US President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “fled his country” after losing the support of his ally Russia.
