Ancient bracelet vanishes from Egyptian Museum in Tahrir

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that it has taken all the necessary legal measures regarding the disappearance of an ancient bracelet from the restoration laboratory at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry explained that it has referred the incident to the various police authorities and the Public Prosecution, and that all relevant authorities were notified to take the necessary measures as soon as it learned of the incident.

It confirmed that a specialized committee has been formed to inventory and review all the artifacts in the restoration laboratory.

In light of the precautionary measures, a photo of the missing piece has been circulated to all archaeological units at Egyptian airports and land, sea, and border ports nationwide, the statement explained.

The Director General of the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir stressed that images currently being circulated on certain news websites and social media are not of the missing piece.

The bracelets shown in these images remain on display in the halls on the second floor of the museum, and that the bracelet under investigation is completely different from them, he said.

The Director General of the museum specified that the missing piece is a gold bracelet with a spherical Lapis Lazuli bead from the collection of King Amenemeuti, dating to the Third Intermediate Period (1069-525 BC).

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities added that the reason the announcement of this investigation was delayed was in order to provide a suitable environment for the investigation to progress.
