Why has Egypt rejected a parallel government in Sudan?

Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Yasser Sorour stressed Cairo’s rejection of a parallel government by the Rapid Support Forces.

During an interview with AlQahera News on Saturday, Sorour explained that the presence of a parallel government complicates the crisis and hinders any efforts to resolve it, noting that Egypt instead has a clear vision regarding the ongoing Sudanese crisis.

Egypt’s position stems from the necessity of preserving the legitimate Sudanese state institutions, he explained, stressing that the collapse of these institutions could lead to widespread chaos – which is not in the interests of Egypt or the region.

He said that the rejection of parallel entities did not come from Egypt alone, but was also confirmed by the African Peace and Security Council, and UN Security Council statements echoed this position.

Sorour emphasized that the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan must be respected and that any threat to it is completely unacceptable.

The Assistant Foreign Minister affirmed that Egypt continues to support Sudan’s legitimate institutions and seeks to facilitate political and negotiated solutions.

He stressed that any attempts to weaken the state or establish parallel entities could undermine peace and stability efforts.

Sorour emphasized the importance of adhering to the Sudanese political path under national leadership to achieve lasting stability.
