Four dead, 11 injured in Cairo tunnel accident

Four people were killed and 11 others injured on Monday in a collision between a truck-trailer and several passenger cars on the Autostrad Road, while heading from New Cairo towards Helwan.

According to security sources, the accident happened approximately 200 meters before the Autostrad tunnel when the truck driver lost control due to excessive speeding.

He then collided with several passenger cars that were traveling slowly in the same direction due to traffic congestion.

The accident resulted in the complete destruction of several vehicles, with one overturning on the side of the road.

Debris and glass were scattered over a wide area.

Ambulances and civil defense vehicles immediately rushed to the scene. The bodies were transported to Helwan General Hospital, while the injured were taken to hospitals in Manshiet Nasser and Maadi for treatment.

Security sources reported that injuries ranged from fractures and lacerations to severe bruises, with some patients still under observation in intensive care.

Authorities investigate cause

The General Directorate of Traffic deployed several tow trucks to remove the damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow, which had been halted for over two hours due to the severity of the collision and the resulting congestion.

The area was also searched to ensure no other victims were trapped under the piled-up vehicles.

The Public Prosecution has launched an investigation into the accident, requesting a police investigation into the circumstances. It has also ordered an examination of the truck and a blood sample to be taken from the driver to determine if he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

Security forces are continuing to review surveillance camera footage from the road to properly determine the cause of the incident.
