Egypt, Finland hold talks on UN agenda and regional crises

CAIRO, Nov 21 (MENA) – Egypt and Finland held a round of consultations on multilateral issues, UN agenda items and regional developments at the foreign ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.

Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Amr El-Sherbiny met Miia Rännä, Finland’s director for UN and general global affairs, and Satu Suikkari-Kleven, Ambassador for UN Peace and Security and Global Partnerships at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, according to a statement by the foreign ministry.

It said the talks covered cooperation on peace and security, international nominations and developments in Palestine, Sudan and Libya. Egypt reiterated its support for the African Union’s position on UN Security Council reform, calling for two permanent seats for Africa with full rights.

Egypt also voiced support for UN reform efforts, including the UN80 initiative, stressing the need to safeguard development priorities of the Global South. Sherbiny underlined the importance of adequate funding for peacekeeping and peacebuilding as key tools for maintaining international peace and security.

The two sides discussed disarmament and non-proliferation issues and preparations for the 11th NPT Review Conference, noting its significance amid worsening global security and a renewed arms race.

They also reviewed regional crises and their political, security and humanitarian impacts, as well as related discussions in UN bodies, including the Security Council, and exchanged views on promoting de-escalation and political solutions.

Egypt stressed its commitment to an effective multilateral system and a strengthened UN role. Finland highlighted the importance of continued coordination with Egypt, praising its regional and international role in supporting stability and international peace and security.
