Egypt warns citizens abroad against social media videos seeking consular help

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning to its citizens abroad regarding videos broadcast on social media platforms requesting consular assistance, as these videos may contain violations of local laws.

In a statement published on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appealed to “Egyptian communities abroad regarding the importance of adhering to the laws of foreign countries concerning the publication of videos on social media to request consular assistance or make distress calls about problems faced by members of the Egyptian community in those countries.”

The Ministry warned that these videos “may include exposing or criticizing foreign authorities or public and private institutions, which puts the citizen under the purview of the law in many countries.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Egyptians abroad to communicate directly with the Egyptian diplomatic mission in their country of residence if they require any consular assistance. This communication should be done either by visiting the diplomatic mission directly or by contacting the hotline (WhatsApp messages) designated for each diplomatic mission.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration and Expatriates Affairs affirmed its primary role in caring for the interests of Egyptians abroad and providing all consular assistance to them, provided that the relevant requests are received through the available official channels.
