CAIRO, Dec 23 (MENA) – Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL) Ahmed Abul Gheit expressed his strong welcome of the address delivered by the prime minister of Sudan’s Transitional Government before the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the comprehensive peace initiative it included.
He said the initiative reflects a deep awareness of the gravity of the crisis facing Sudan and a clear commitment to ending the war, stopping the bloodshed and alleviating the humanitarian suffering endured by the Sudanese people, in a manner that preserves Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said the AL values the significant political, humanitarian and security messages contained in the initiative, viewing it as a serious and constructive framework that warrants positive engagement.
He stressed that it should be considered a central component of any comprehensive solution and of efforts aimed at ending the armed conflict and restoring security and stability in Sudan, in a way that prevents threats to national unity or the fragmentation of the country’s social fabric.
The spokesperson added that the AL supports the initiative’s call for a comprehensive ceasefire, the protection of civilians, the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid, addressing the conditions of internally displaced persons and refugees, disarmament, and the implementation of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration programs.
These measures would help create the necessary groundwork for rebuilding trust, repairing the social fabric and strengthening the foundations of a unified Sudanese state, he said.
He further said that the AL underscores the importance of engaging with the initiative’s proposed confidence-building measures—political, security, economic, and social—based on the principles of transitional justice, reparations, national reconciliation and non-exclusion.
This, he added, would enhance the prospects for sustainable peace, safeguard the unity of society and the state and prevent the recurrence of violence or a slide toward division or fragmentation. (MENA)
