The Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayyeb, received a phone call from Pope Tawadros II, Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, to offer his congratulations on the approach of Eid al-Fitr.
Pope Tawadros expressed his wishes for a blessed and joyous Eid for the Grand Sheikh and all Muslims, praying that God would bring these happy occasions back to Egypt.
He praised the role played by the Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar in spreading awareness, consolidating enlightened thought, and promoting the values of coexistence.
Tayyeb expressed his appreciation for this fraternal gesture from Pope Tawadros II, affirming that such occasions represent a renewed opportunity to highlight the strength of the national unity that binds the people of Egypt together.
Tayyeb noted Azhar’s pride in its relationship with the Egyptian churches, which culminated in the establishment of the “Egyptian Family House”—a unique model of cooperation between Azhar scholars and church leaders—and which has played an active role in confronting various forms of sectarian strife and promoting social stability.
