A wastewater leak occurred on Tuesday from the treatment plant of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater in the Aloush area of Matrouh Governorate.
This prompted immediate action from the governorate’s executive authorities to control the situation and prevent the water from spreading to residential areas.
According to an official statement, the leak occurred in a section of wastewater treatment basin within the plant.
Emergency teams and relevant authorities immediately rushed to the scene to monitor the water’s path and address the issue, especially given concerns about its approach to populated areas.
The Holding Company for Water and Wastewater swiftly responded by halting the flow of wastewater into the network and diverted it to alternative basins to reduce pressure on the affected basin.
Simultaneously, a series of urgent technical measures were implemented to control the leak.
Coordination was ongoing around the clock among various executive bodies to ensure the situation was fully contained, authorities confirmed.
Intensive field monitoring was also conducted to confirm that no water was leaking towards the valley or nearby residential areas, which was successfully achieved without any direct threat to residents.
Urgent inspection
As part of the on-site monitoring, Matrouh Governor Mohamed Zamalout conducted an inspection tour of the incident site to assess the situation firsthand.
The governor called to quickly take the necessary measures to address the impact of the leak, ordering the formation of an urgent committee headed by the Directorate of Agriculture to assess the damage to crops and trees in the vicinity of the area, in preparation for compensating impacted citizens.
“The state will not abandon any affected citizen, and all losses will be accurately assessed and the necessary compensation disbursed according to legal procedures,” he assured.
The crisis is being addressed through a comprehensive plan that balances rapid containment with measures to prevent future recurrences, the governor added.
The governorates announced the completion of the removal of the water accumulations resulting from the leak.
The relevant authorities are currently working to improve the earthen embankment surrounding the damaged treatment basin, while simultaneously implementing a comprehensive technical plan to reinforce the treatment basins at the station.
This will enhance their capacity to withstand operational pressures and prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
