Egypt’s women’s U-18 handball team continued their remarkable run at the IHF Women’s Youth World Championship in Romania, securing a historic 23-22 victory over Denmark on Tuesday to book a place in the quarterfinals.
The Egyptians have emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises after defeating Denmark, one of the world’s traditional handball powerhouses, to cement their status as the competition’s dark horse.
The win followed Egypt’s opening main-round victory over South Korea, allowing the team to finish the stage with a perfect record and confirm their place in the last eight.
Egypt have now recorded five consecutive victories, topping both their preliminary and main-round groups without defeat in an unprecedented achievement that reflects the rapid progress of Egyptian women’s handball.
The team advanced to the main round after finishing first in their preliminary group with victories over European runners-up Croatia, world contenders France and Fiji, whom they defeated 83-17, before adding wins over South Korea and Denmark.
Egypt will now look to continue their historic campaign when they compete in the quarterfinals after producing a series of outstanding performances since the start of the tournament.
