The Egyptian army forces have intervened on Thursday to separate both the supporters and opponents of incumbent president Hosni Mubarak at Tahrir Square, Cairo's main square, hours after bloody encounters between the two sides, according to eyewitnesses.
The president's supporters retreated tens of meters back from the square which turned into a battlefield yesterday, with five killed and more than 800 injured.
The army created a distance between both protests as it reacted to curb the violence, it said.
The state-run TV quoted an army spokesperson who said that the armed forces maintained a strict policy of non-engagement in order to protect its neutrality.
