The second semester in Egyptian schools and universities has been postponed for one week as a result of ongoing protests, announced the Egyptian government on Wednesday.
In a Wednesday statement, Higher Education Minister Hani Helal said the government issued instructions that the mid-year vacation will be extended in order to allow time to repair schools damaged during the past two weeks and correct exams that were taken prior to the recent turmoil.
Some believe that more university students will participate in ongoing protests demanding the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak if studies resume at Egyptian universities. The protests began on 25 January.
Measures adopted by government authorities, such as curfews and disruption of government services in an attempt to prevent people from participating in the protests, have proven futile as millions of Egyptians continue flocking to Tahrir Square and protesting across the nation.
