Egypt on Monday won an election for membership in the International Labour Organization's (ILO) board of directors, a position it will hold until 2014.
Egypt earned 229 votes in the elections, which took place during the 100th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.
Egypt won the highest number of votes among African nations nominated for membership, said Hisham Badr, Egypt's permanent representative at the UN headquarters in Geneva.
Badr also said Samir Allam, a member of the Egyptian Industries Union, won an election for a position representing businessmen at the board of the directors. He received the highest number of votes.
Badr said the election results reflect Egypt's position both internationally and inside the ILO. He said they represent a message of support from ILO members and the international community for the path Egypt has taken after the 25 January revolution.
