Islamist presidential hopeful echoes complaints of SCAF’s slowness

An Islamist presidential hopeful on Tuesday criticized the performance of Egypt's ruling military council and the government in meeting revolution demands.

In an interview with privately-owned Dream TV channel, Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh said the government and military council's slowness in fulfilling demands was the main reason for renewed unrest.

“We support the revolution’s demands of accelerating public trials of those who killed protesters, as well as guarantees of transparency and purging the Interior Ministry,” he said.

Abouel Fotouh also called for the protection of peaceful protesters and not using force against them.

He said setting guidelines for selecting members of the committee that will write the new constitution is acceptable, provided they conform with the March referendum results and are approved by the people.

He said he is still waiting to see how committee members will be chosen.

“We await a cabinet reshuffle that fulfills people’s demands,” Abouel Fotouh also said.

He called on Egyptians to stay committed to their right of peaceful expression without causing damage to private or public property.
