Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has called an emergency cabinet meeting for Friday evening to address the ongoing security situation in Sinai, amid reports that Israeli and Egyptian forces have been engaging in hostilities there.
The ministers of justice, interior, foreign affairs, international cooperation and health, as well as representatives from the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and the General Intelligence Services, will be in attendance.
The meeting will discuss reports set to be issued by the military, General Intelligence Services, and the Ministries of Health and Interior concerning the reported violent clashes with Israel in Sinai.
Major General Khaled Fouda, the governor of South Sinai, denied rumors that the extremists infiltrated Israel through Sinai.
Adding to the current tension, a military source reported that an explosion took place on Friday morning near the Egyptian-Israeli border, adjacent to Gaza Strip, leaving no injuries.
An intelligence source indicated that the explosion was caused by a bomb left over from previous wars with Israel.
