Algerian diva Warda said she regrets having sung for ex-President Hosni Mubarak. A singer should make songs for a nation, not its ruler, she said.
In a radio interview with Nogom FM, Warda said dedicating a song to Mubarak was “the mistake of my life.”
Warda also claimed Mubarak refused to grant her son Egyptian nationality.
Warda, along with other singers such as Sabah and Om Kolthoum contributed to what came to be known as the Golden Age of the Egyptian song in the 1960s.
Former President Gamal Abdel Nasser ordered that Warda sing a part in the famous pan-Arab musical “My Greater Homeland”.
Fifteen years ago, Warda took part in a musical titled “We Chose Him,” in a reference to ex-president Mubarak. Warda also dedicated a song titled “The Hero of my Country” to Mubarak.
Following the 25 January revolution, several activists put Warda on a black list of artists who supported Mubarak’s regime.
