Intelligence chief attends funeral of famous Egyptian agent

With two bouquets of flowers and a red carpet, the funeral of Ahmed al-Hawan, known as Gomaa al-Shawan, a former Egyptian intelligence agent, took place on Wednesday at a mosque near the service’s headquarters in Cairo’s Hadaeq al-Qobba district.

Hawan is famous for his work as a double agent who spied on Israel during the late 1960's and early 1970's.

Although Shawan was a popular personality, many public figures did not attend the funeral.

Present were the intelligence chief and all leaders of the service, in addition to his wife, his two sons and his nephew.

He died at the age of 72 in Wadi al-Nil Hospital after many years of illness.

Hawan's body, wrapped in Egypt’s flag, was taken to be buried in his hometown of Suez.

The body was received in Suez by the governor, leaders of the third field army, and thousands of citizens.
