Moqbil Shaker, vice president of the National Human Rights Council (NHRC), began mediating on Monday between Egypt’s lawyers and judges in an attempt to resolve the dispute that erupted earlier this month when a court sentenced two lawyers to five years in prison each for assaulting a prosecutor.
Skaker met with Lawyers Syndicate President Hamdi Khalifa to discuss the issue. Yet the two men declined to give statements to the press as to whether or not they had reached a solution.
Shaker is also scheduled to meet with several judges in coming days.
The Lawyers Syndicate, meanwhile, organized a vigil in Tanta on Monday in which some 700 lawyers took part. The vigil was only one of many protests staged by lawyers in cities throughout Egypt since the outset of the crisis.
