Reports: Mubarak, Adly to comment on murder charges

Ousted President Hosni Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly will submit written personal comments to the Cairo Criminal Court on murder charges filed against them, news reports said.

According to the leftist news website Al-Badil, Mohamed Abdel Aziz al-Guindi, one of Adly’s lawyers, told Dream satellite channel Wednesday that the former minister had written an account clarifying the roles played by former officials during the revolution.

Mubarak, Adly and six former security officials are being tried on charges of involvement in the murder of pro-democracy activists during the 25 January uprising, which forced Mubarak to step down.

The court will hear closing arguments from the defense lawyers Wednesday before setting a date for the final verdict.

Guindi told media presenter Wael al-Ibrashy that Adly will comment on the roles played by Mubarak, former intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, and current military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.

Guindi declined to answer Ibrashy’s inquiry about the content of the letters, but said they would prove that his client did not act alone, and that other former and incumbent officials also made decisions dealing with protesters.

Dostor news website said Mubarak would submit his own statement that will address the accusations against him, including corruption charges related to the country's natural gas deal with Israel.
