Arguments broke out Sunday between defense and plaintiffs’ lawyers in the Port Said football violence court case after defense lawyers accused a witness, Ahmed Mahmoud, of perjury.
The plaintiffs’ lawyers accused the defense lawyers of intimidating the witnesses.
Port Said Criminal Court adjourned the trial of the suspects in the violence to Monday to allow a technician from the Egyptian Radio and Television Union to examine footage of the assaults.
Masry football team fans flooded the field in Port Said Stadium on 1 February, seconds after the end of a match between the home team and Cairo’s Ahly team, leading to the deaths of 74 people.
Witness Hossam Rabie said that as soon as Ahly fans arrived outside Port Said Stadium, Masry fans hurled stones at their bus, smashing the windows. When the Masry fans got in, they assaulted them with flares and pelted them with stones.
After the match ended, the lights went out and Masry fans attacked Ahly fans with knives and other weapons, Rabie said. He added that security forces did not intervene.
