Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh, a former Muslim Brotherhood leader and a presidential hopeful, denounced the killing of five Egyptian military and security personnel in Sinai by Israeli forces Thursday in an official statement published on his website on Friday afternoon, calling on the ruling military council to expel the Israeli ambassador from Cairo.
"The Israeli enemy should be aware that Egyptian blood is the most precious thing we have, and that agreements and treaties are not worth the ink used to write them if the blood of citizens is shed," the statement reads.
Abouel Fotouh called on the ruling military council to treat the killings as a case of national security that affects all Egyptians.
He added that the council should, in addition to expelling the Israeli ambassador, definitively cancel all gas export contracts with Israel.
Military sources revealed Thursday that an Israeli helicopter opened fire on a group of armed men at the Rafah border crossing that same day, killing Egyptian military and security personnel and wounding others.
Abouel Fotouh held Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "fully responsible for this crime," as well as his defense minister and any Israeli official who gave a direct order to fire at Egyptian soldiers at the border.
