Presidential hopeful Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh said Sunday he excused himself from attending a meeting with Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, head of ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF), and several prominent representatives of political groups yesterday.
On Twitter, Abouel Fotouh denied media rumours that he attended the meeting.
The meeting was intended to discuss solutions for the current crisis, as onging protests demand power be handed to civilians and the formation of a national salvation government with full powers.
Protesters proposed names such as Abouel Fotouh's and Mohamed ElBaradei's to form a new government.
ElBaradei met with Tantawi and the latter's chief of staff, Sami Anan, on Saturday.
According to news reports, Tantawi suggested that ElBaradei form a consultative council, but he refused.
