Ahmed Ezz’s challenge to asset freeze rejected

Cairo Criminal Court on Monday turned down a request by steel mogul Ahmed Ezz to lift a freeze ordered for his assets since 2011.

The freeze on Ezz’s, and his family’s, assets is related to a case in which all face accusations of profiteering and the amassing of fortunes from ambiguous sources.

Ezz was the secretary of organization in former president Hosni Mubarak’s dissolved National Democratic Party. He stood trial for multiple charges of corruption and illicit gain since the 2011 uprising that ousted Mubarak from presidency.

He is being retried over charges of obtaining illegal licenses for his steel factories.
