The chief editor of Al-Wafd newspaper, Osama Heikal, was sworn in as Minister of Information on Saturday.
Heikal is the first minister of information to succeed Anas al-Fiqqi, who was information minister before the 25 January revolution.
Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi held a meeting with Heikal to discuss the need to restructure media policies.
The meeting also tackled the negative practices of the media recently, the need to regain confidence in the Egyptian media's role, and to restore its leadership in the region.
Besides being the chief editor of Al- Wafd, Heikal also worked as a reporter for military affairs and wrote weekly articles for Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The appointment of Heikal comes amid repeated demands to purge state media of past regime practices and figures.
