Araby denies negotiations over presidential run

The Secretary General of Arab League Nabil al-Araby denied Saturday that he is discussing a run for the presidency with any political forces.

He also said rumors of foreign powers selecting him as a presidential hopeful had no basis.

The Egyptian people will determine the future of the country, Araby said, through free elections.

In a statement Saturday, Araby said that presidential elections should come after the completion of a new constitution, which will define the functions of a new government, including the limits on the president's role. He said a disciplined timeline was needed during the transition period.

Rumors of Araby's possible candidacy began to circulate on Wednesday, when Al-Tahrir newspaper quoted Mansour Hassan, head of the Advisory Council to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, saying that Araby would have his vote if he runs for president.
