Araby: Syrian regime can still avoid foreign intervention

The Syrian regime still has an opportunity to overcome its current crisis if it signs an Arab League protocol allowing an observer mission on the ground, Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby said Thursday.

The Syrian regime signing the protocol would allow for an internal Arab solution and avoid the risk of foreign intervention in Syria, Araby continued, adding that signing the protocol could lead the League Council to rethink the measures it has already taken against Syria.

The Syrian regime has not signed the observer mission protocol and is trying to delegitimize the offer by claiming it was discussed without the input of Syria, whose membership in the Arab League was suspended on 16 November, an Arab diplomatic source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Syria must sign the protocol to determine the legal framework and mechanisms by which the observer mission would operate, because without the cooperation of the Syrian regime the mission will not be able to carry out its entrusted task, the same source added.
