Three senior Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority officials, including the vice president, have been referred to a disciplinary board on accusations of corruption, mismanagement and negligence, an authority source said.
The decision came in response to complaints received by the Electricity and Energy Ministry, to which the authority is affiliated. The ministry referred the complaints to an administrative prosecutor, prompting the authority to refer the accused officials to a disciplinary board that is expected to dismiss them. The authority did not disclose the identities of the three.
Samer Mekheimar, former head of the authority's Atomic Reactors Department, described this step as a last-minute attempt to clean house before Egypt's new president is sworn in.
Mekheimar resigned in December 2010 due to what he said was poor management of the authority. He alleged in his resignation letter, which he submitted to the public prosecution, that the authority head and other officials had committed several financial, security and administrative crimes.
