Attorney-General suspends defamation case against Ayman Nour

The attorney-general has suspended an investigation into Ghad Party founder Ayman Nour, who had been accused by lawyers associated with the ruling National Democratic Party of "defaming" Gamal Mubarak, the 47-year-old son of President Hosni Mubarak and a potential candidate in next year's presidential elections.

NDP-affiliated lawyers had also accused Nour of attempting to deny the younger Mubarak's "civil right" to contest the elections.

For an investigation to take place, Gamal Mubarak himself must file the complaint,” said Attorney-General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, adding that the matter fell under the jurisdiction of the official electoral supervisory committee.

Meanwhile, Gamal Mubarak supporters continued campaigning for their nominee in cities throughout Egypt, hanging electoral posters and distributing t-shirts bearing slogans in support of the presidential scion.
