Authorities investigate shooting of monk’s car in Fayoum

Interior Ministry authorities are investigating a video clip shared online alleging that two individuals opened fire on a monastery in Fayoum Governorate, injuring one of the monks.

In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry explained that the New Fayoum Police Station received a report of the incident on June 26.

According to the report, two monks from a monastery within the station’s jurisdiction were traveling in a car, and passed by a plot of land adjacent to the monastery when they were they were confronted by two private security guards.

The land had previously been reclaimed from monastery employees and handed over to the relevant authorities as state property.

The statement added that one of the guards fired a shotgun at the car, injuring one of the monks in the left foot with shotgun pellets.

The ministry confirmed that the two suspects have been identified and apprehended, and that the necessary legal measures have been taken.

The Public Prosecution has launched an investigation, and inquiries are ongoing to determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
