Badie, 17 Brotherhood leaders challenge putting them on the terrorists list

Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie and 17 other leaders have challenged their designation on the Egypt's national list of terrorists, according to a judicial source.

This is the first challenge since the law on terrorist entities was passed last February.

Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat had placed Badie and the others on the list on March 29 in a first application of the law that was issued after the violent events of the Guidance Bureau on June 30, 2013.

Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the Muslim Brotherhood was designated as a terrorist organization, after the media and government officials were quick to blame it for the December 2013 bombing of the Daqahliya Security Directorate in Mansoura, which led to the death of 16 and the injuriy of 132.

Though Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis declared responsibility for the attack, including other assassination attempts against former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, they were not declared a terrorist organization until mid-April of the following year after the United States had already designated the group.
