The Culture Ministry has launched a “Million Reader” initiative, whereby the representatives of the ministry distribute bags full of books to the residents of the five oases in the Western Desert.
Culture Minister Abdel Wahid al-Nabawy said the initiative aims to promote the culture of reading and disseminate knowledge in areas where there are no bookshops, as well as protect the youth from adopting extremist ideas.
He said the books are about literature, cinema, theater, art, fiction, folklore and other subjects.
Ezzat Ibrahim, director of the initiative, said 35,000 books have already been distributed.
