Belgian ambassador advises Egyptian government to cultivate rooftops

Belgian Ambassador to Cairo Gilles Heyvaert has advised the Egyptian government to develop a program for the cultivation of rooftops for growing food that needs small amounts of water, explaining that this type of farming reduces carbon in the air and keeps the environment clean.

Speaking at a conference on rural development, Heyvaert said one of the most important problems facing the agricultural sector in Egypt is a record high 18-percent waste of agricultural products, which reduces exports to Europe, attributing it to the absence of an efficient transportation system throughout the stages of production and export and to encroachment on arable land.
