Sources close to the Muslim Brotherhood said the group’s Guidance Bureau is conducting intensive investigations into its young members who support Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh, a group member who independently announced plans to run in upcoming presidential elections without the group’s consent.
The group previously announced that it would not field candidates in the elections.
Group media spokesman Ahmed Osama said other group leaders secretly support Abouel Fotouh.
“I was investigated ten days ago,” said Abouel Fotouh's campaign manager in Minya. “I told them I support him because he is moderate and has charisma.”
“They reminded me of the principle of absolute obedience to the group’s decisions,” he added. “But I rejected this principle.”
