Brotherhood spokesperson arrested

Muslim Brotherhood spokesperson Ahmed Aref was arrested early Thursday, in an apartment in east Cairo's Nasr City, said Cairo Investigation Department head Gamal Abdel Aal.

Immediately following the arrest, the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party announced the news on its official Facebook page.

Aref’s arrest comes as part of a campaign launched by the Cairo Security Directorate to catch supposed terrorist elements, including those belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood. A series of arrest warrants have been issued following violence between Brotherhood supporters and security forces over the past week, which has left hundreds dead across Egypt.

“The Interior Ministry is determined to catch all those wanted by the judiciary and all those who have committed crimes against the Egyptian people,” Abdel Aal said.

The Egyptian police's Facebook page, an unofficial page run by officers, published the pictures of Aref after his arrest.

Authorities had previously arrested Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, and Safwat Hegazy, a prominent preacher with ties to the beleaguered Islamist group.
