Cairo International Airport will be closed for passengers waiting for flights from 1:30-5:30 am in summer to save energy, according to Minister of Civil Aviation Wael al-Maddawy.
Maddawy added that one lane at the airport will be kept operational between those times to receive flights that are landing.
The closure is slated to start 1 June, and airlines will be notified at least 90 days before the rule is implemented, according to state-run news agency MENA.
Maddawy added that the airport is not affected by power outages since it has backup generators, but that the government was trying to save energy and that similar closures take place in airports throughout the world.
Meanwhile, Maddawy also said that a flight belonging to the Memphis Company brought a group of Iranian tourists to Aswan Airport, adding that an agreement signed by the tourism minister to promote Iranian tourism to Egypt compels Iranian tour groups to land in the Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Aswan airports.
Maddawy also said that any charter company that wishes to take on Iranian customers has to apply to the Civil Aviation Authority for the necessary approvals.
