Cairo Governor devotes 20 acres for permit-free protests

Cairo Governor Galal al-Saeed has devoted 20 acres of land at Fustat Park in Fatimid Cairo for citizens eager to stage protests without the need for prior security clearance.

The decision does not require protesters to buy tickets to enter the park, but rather to get inside through gates to be allocated for demonstrators.

A recently-issued, divisive law regulating protests requires demonstrators to request permission from security before staging demonstrations, levying fines on violators. However, one of its provisions empowers governors to specify areas for citizens where clearance is not required.
